Drawing from Sara Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology, my work considers the pathways we are directed toward, what happens when they fail us, and how we might find our bearings elsewhere. My work often begins with objects that carry the residue of class, power, and empire into everyday life. Through these objects of hospitality and luxury, I consider the morality placed on consumption, the complicated ethics of pleasure and indulgence, and the delicate boundary between care and control. I’m drawn to the friction between an object’s beauty and the systems of power embedded within it, and to our desire and complicity in continuing to indulge in its use. Glass wilts, vessels overflow, tablecloths stand like ghosts, and serving platters melt: objects behaving almost magically against their prescribed forms. Through collapse, excess, and instability, familiar objects become strange, bodily, funny, mournful, or unruly.&nbsp; Kitty Rauth (b. 1992, New Jersey) is an artist and organizer based in Chicago, IL. Their interdisciplinary practice uses sculpture, writing, and research to consider the histories embedded in everyday objects and rituals, particularly those shaped by class, power, pleasure, and systems of care and control. She has exhibited nationally, including at Secrist | Beach (Chicago), Roots &amp; Culture (Chicago), Collective 62 (Miami), Westbeth Gallery (New York), Vox Populi (Philadelphia), and LVL3 (Chicago), among others. In 2024, they were selected for Newcity’s Art 50: Chicago’s Visual Vanguard. Rauth holds a BFA from Arcadia University and an MFA in Studio Art from the Sculpture Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The title of the exhibition refers to one of the most iconic spaces within Grey Towers Castle, an immense, elaborately furnished room on the first floor with mirrored surfaces on all four walls, used originally by the Harrisons and today by the University for hosting special events and celebrations. For the artist, the space acts simultaneously as a symbol for the unfettered opulence of the so-called “Gilded Age”, as well as a place for introspection and self-analysis. In the gallery, coincidentally named for William Welsh Harrison, Rauth appropriated and arranged objects and architectural forms from the well-known Cheltenham Township landmark to create a new space for both the artist and visitors to reflect upon the dysfunctional systems of power that led to the accumulation of wealth that funded the estate’s creation. Culture, Chicago IL September 12-October 25, 2025 Pleasure Cruise was&nbsp;a two-person exhibition presenting video installation works and sculptures by artists Ále Campos and Kitty Rauth. Campos takes a step back from liveness and explores performance on camera. These discreet video installations extract the double entendre embedded within the age-old question of gay cruising culture, “are you looking?”. Taking on the architectural forms and objects associated with sites of anonymous sex, these videos become queered speculative sites for contemplating tension, gaze and intimacy. Rauth follows the histories of sunken cruise ships, namely the Titanic, to consider the complications of pleasure and indulgence. Engaging nautical traditions and symbolism, historical recreation, and fan fiction, the work builds a haunted picture of the relationship between classed hubris and catastrophic failure. Rather than engage in the targeted joyful representation of small to mid-fat bodies popular in the ‘body positivity movement,’ the exhibition critiqued the overwhelming metaphysical censorship of fat lives in a world that attempts to will them out of existence or consume them as entertainment. The works in this show challenged viewers’ to consider their own histories with anti-fat attitudes, while simultaneously engaging in the radical act of creating communities between fat people. SOMA GROSSA was curated by Anna Mirzayan as part of Brew House Association’s Prospectus Emerging Curator program.
